The spring beauty updates to make to your makeup and skincare routine

Spring clean your beauty routine.

We love a spring beauty reset. The start of the new season calls for a shift in gears and we're not just talking about swapping out heavy winter face creams for lightweight, spring-appropriate formulas (although that is part of it). We reckon, it's as good a time as any to step back, assess what you've got, where there are gaps that need filling and how you want to feel moving forward. It's also an opportunity to break out of a rut and get re-inspired.

Skincare

The switches: Like a big closet clear-out, it's best to take your skincare back to the bare bones then re-introduce products methodically, provided they still work for you and your lifestyle. Every skincare routine should include a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF, so start there. Examine your current skin type (this can change throughout the month and year, so we have a handy guide here). It's also a good idea to consider whether your skin is feeling sensitised (in which case you might want to take a more gentle approach).

This is very individual, so there's no one-size-fits all solution, but if you're really struggling, you could always book in a virtual (or IRL) consultation with a skin expert. One switch you may want to think about however, is your cleanser. Usually spring means opting for a lighter formula, but take a cue from your makeup. If you like a statement eye or lip, or like to layer up on full-coverage foundation, stick to deep-cleaning balms, or an extra makeup removing step, such as a micellar water. If you're more of a minimalist, a single gentle cleanse might work better for you.

When it comes to your moisturiser and serums, lots of light layers work better than anything too thick, especially going into spring. We're particularly obsessed with the new-gen wave of hydrating essences (also called lotions or toners, which offer a pre-moisturiser layer of hydration). Also, hyaluronic acid serums to keep skin hydrated as the weather warms up and face mists, to lock all of that moisture in.

Try: Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Moisture Essence (£60). Cerave Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum(£12.75). Byoma Moisturising Gel (£11.99). Weleda Prickly Pear Hydrating Facial Mist (£13.55). Dr Dennis Gross All Physical Lightweight Wrinkle Defense SPF (£46).

Makeup

The switches: Now is the perfect time for a proper makeup bag clear out, so empty it out and if anything is a) expired or b) never used, axe it. To shake off winter, you might fancy swapping to a lighter coverage and tactical concealer. ICONIC London's range of Sheer Bronzers and Blusher's are magic if you're leaning into "no makeup makeup". That said, we're also very much on board with full-throttle makeup to showcase your skills.

The four HUGE makeup trends for spring beauty are ‘90s frosted shimmer (whether that’s across eyelids or lips), sheer-bold blush (more of it, just in sheerer formulas) colour pop eyes (think pastel liners and bright shadows) or lightweight grunge (gauzy smoky eyes and weightless lip stains).

Try: ICONIC London Sheer Blush (£16.80), Pat McGrath Labs Lust Gloss (£28), H&M Liquid Eyeliner (£5.99) Vieve Noir Soul Shadows (£29) and KIKO Long Lasting Colour Lip Marker (£9.99).
